Why muzzle a dog?

Dog walking
/by
It's quite often a misconception that when you see a dog wearing a muzzle that it must be an aggressive animal. We walk several dogs ourselves that wear a muzzle but it doesn't always mean that the dog is aggressive, there are many reasons that he or she could be wearing one. We take a look at several of those reasons why a muzzle might be used: Aggression is, of course, one reason to use one. Dogs can become aggressive to other dogs and humans. The most sensible and responsible option is to fit a muzzle if there is a slight feeling that they could turn aggressive. If the dog is prone to aggressive behaviour seeking professional help is a good idea. Sometimes the dog can become agitated and nervous and their natural reaction is retreat and protect themselves which could result in aggressive tendancies. Involving the services of a professional dog trainer would be a good idea to allow the dog to work through the reasons for their behaviour problems and hopefully resolve them.Dog owners many need to muzzle a dog if they have recently undergone an operation or maybe you're using a treatment like flea drops. It's the easiest way to stop them licking themselves and causing illness or infection. Another reason for a muzzle, and one that is quite common, is to stop them eating things whilst out walking. The amount of dogs that will try eating old food, berries they shouldn't or, dare I say it,...

A stressful dog?

Now that many of us are working from home or maybe you're still Furlonged, our dogs are enjoying having us at home much more which is wonderful. Most dogs will love this idea with all the extra cuddles, walks and attention but for some dogs, this can prove stressful too with the additional noise and less space and the lack of sofa to themselves. If you can, try to give your dog a little bit of space. Maybe take a walk to the park or the local shop alone to give them time by themselves. Dogs love routine! If you can, while at home, try to plan a routine such as set times for walks, feeding, alone time and so on. Plan regular times to have play time whether that's indoors with treat games or throwing a ball in the garden. Dogs are just like us - they don't like change so think about what works for you and your...

Life in Lockdown

It's an experience that most of us never expected and one that hopefully none of us will experience again in our life time but Coronavirus has changed the way we live our lives. As a professional dog walker, before the virus we spent our weeks working outside and enjoying the great outdoors. We got to enjoy everything that the Kent Countryside has to offer from the Bluebells, local wildlife, open fields and we got paid to do this but suddenly we were told that we should stop working and staying at home was the safest way to get through the pandemic, so we temporarily shut down the business and stayed at home. What a strange experience that was. We missed spending our days with our fur babies. We tried to keep busy with our daily walk outside, we enjoyed day-time TV (something we've not done in a very long time) and caught up on jobs around the house that we've put off for so long. The house has never looked so tidy! Ha Ha Rare trips to the supermarket were alien to all of us with the new rules and keeping 2 meter distances from others was a new experience. And it goes without saying, not seeing our friends and family has been heart breaking. But slowly you adapt and you learn to live in the new world that is in the middle of a pandemic. As time went on we started to receive amazing pictures and videos from our wonderful...

2020 – What a year so far!

This is how we started 2020, full of life and excitement for the year ahead but like all of us, 2020 has so far proved to be a very different year. Temporarily closing down to Covid-19 was an incredibly hard decision to make, however it was absolutely the right decision to protect all our families and yours. Thankfully your support has been amazing and we're delighted to be back up and running again. 2020, so far, has been full of highs and lows. The lows are for obvious reasons with the virus but today we are focusing on the amazing highs... Firstly, we celebrated three wonderful years in business in March. Over that time we've looked after and met some amazing people and their fur babies. We've loved every minute, even the days of rain and mud ....lol, well, sort of! We've learnt so much and continue to do so, and welcome any ideas you might have on how to improve or take our business forward. 2020 also was a big year for me, Kirsty, as I welcomed my baby daughter to the world and, maybe the dog walking team, one day! Mya was born in the second week of lockdown, during a world wide pandemic. It was a scary time but we made it through and we are very much enjoying time off with her. I hope to be back working in a few months. In the meantime, Annie is being an absolute star, holding the fort...

A wedding day to remember

This summer saw our first wedding for the lovely owners of Fergus. We were absolutely delighted to be asked to escort Fergus to his mum and dads wedding and share their special day with them. The weather was perfect, the special couple looked stunning and the setting of The Orangery in Maidstone couldn't have been better. What can we say about Fergus, well what a super star he was. He was a real professional when having his photo taken and a little bark at the end of the ceremony couldn't have been better timed as we all celebrated the marriage of Neill & Claire. He loved being there and we loved looking after him. Being part of their wedding, our role was to collect and take Fergus to the wedding location, look after him throughout the ceremony and the following proceedings. We kept him entertained when the couple and guest were busy and on stand by for any staring photos. I think he quite enjoyed all the guests coming over to say hello. When the day ended, we took him to his overnight stay for some much needed rest. We have so many wonderful memories of the day, and for our first wedding it could not have been a better, so well done to Fergus for being an angel and huge congratulations to Neill and Claire xxx To find out more about how Ashford Paws can help you include your dog at your wedding, get in touch...

We can't believe it's nearly a year since we launched Ashford Paws. It's been an amazing and hectic first year. We've got to meet so many new dogs and their owners and shared so many brilliant memories. We've nearly made it through the first winter and boy has it been cold. It's not over yet though as they forecast snow next week so we'll have mud for a bit longer yet! The good news, we're seeing signs of spring already and we can't wait. We've very excited for the year ahead. There's lots of exciting plans in the pipeline and we can't wait to share it with you all very soon. You've helped us to make it a very successful first year and long may it continue. Thank you to everyone from friends and family to our amazing clients and their much loved pets, thank...

The last six months have been amazing and it was about time for another post. We've been delighted at the response we have received to the point that our lunchtime walks are almost fully booked. We've loved meeting and making friends with all our new dogs. They come in all shapes and sizes and each one has their own unique and wonderful personality. Every day is different and it's so lovely seeing all the pups making new friends. Now that the autumn is here we're busy planning our diaries that already go well into 2018. The next few months will be enjoying the walks in the woods, ankle deep in autumn leaves, the rain....bring on the waterproofs...., a lot of mud, and, dare we say it, Christmas! Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your...
